Application Modernization

Legacy System Modernization for the Software Your Business Runs On

Your daily work runs on an aging system nobody wants to touch. We move it to supported technology one part at a time, while the old system keeps running and your data and workflows come along.

Signs Your Legacy System Needs Modernizing

Most legacy systems still do their job. The risk builds around them: security updates stop, the people who knew the code move on and every change takes longer.

  • Security Updates Have Ended
  • The Original Developer Has Moved On
  • A System Nobody Wants to Touch
  • Hard to Hire for the Old Technology
  • Running on an Aging Server
  • Data Other Tools Can't Reach

Application Modernization Services

Our legacy application modernization work covers the older systems companies still run their daily work on. These are common examples, not the full list.

.NET Framework to Modern .NET

Older .NET Framework apps moved to a supported version of .NET, keeping the business rules that still work.

VB6 Migration to a Web App

Visual Basic 6 and other Windows desktop apps rebuilt as secure web apps, with screens your team will recognize.

Access and Database Migration

Microsoft Access and aging databases moved to SQL Server or PostgreSQL, with the data cleaned and checked on the way.

Classic ASP, AngularJS and PHP Apps

Older web apps moved to a current framework such as React or Angular, one screen or module at a time.

Cloud Migration to Azure or AWS

Our cloud migration services move apps off an aging server into Microsoft Azure or AWS, sized for how your team uses them.

Old Reports Rebuilt as Dashboards

Reports, exports and side spreadsheets built around the old system rebuilt in the new one and checked against the old totals.

Rewrite or Step-by-Step Modernization

Most legacy software modernization doesn't need a full rewrite. After the review we recommend one of these paths and explain the trade-offs.

Upgrade in Place

When the code is sound, we move it to a supported version of its framework. Screens, data and workflows stay as they are.

Replace One Part at a Time

New modules take over one workflow at a time while the old system runs the rest. Each step is small enough to test before the next one starts.

Move the Server First

When an aging server is the biggest risk, the app moves to the cloud as it is. The code is modernized after that.

Rebuild When It Makes Sense

When the old code would cost more to keep than to replace, we say so and explain why. The rebuild runs in phases and carries your data and workflows over.

How We Learn What Your Old System Does

Often nobody wrote down what the old system does. The code, the database and the people who use it every day still know, so we start with all three.

  • Code and Dependency Review
  • Database and Data Quality Review
  • Hosting and Security Check
  • Interviews With the People Who Use It
  • A Map of Screens, Rules and Reports
  • A Recommendation With the Reasons Behind It

Legacy System Migration and Data Cleanup

Your data is the one part of the old system you can't rebuild. We move it in trial runs first, clean it along the way and check that the new version matches before anyone relies on it.

  • Trial Migrations on a Copy of Your Data
  • Duplicates and Broken Records Cleaned Up
  • Record Counts and Totals Compared
  • Old and New Versions Run Side by Side
  • Familiar Screens and Workflows Kept
  • A Switch-Over Date You Approve

Our Application Modernization Process

You approve the path before work starts and each switch-over before your team moves.

  1. Review the System

We read the code, database, dependencies and hosting, and talk with the people who use the system every day.

  2. Recommend a Path

An upgrade, a step-by-step replacement or a rebuild, with the reasons, phases, timeline and cost.

  3. Modernize in Phases

We start with the part that carries the most risk or value, while the old system keeps running the rest.

  4. Test and Switch Over

Automated tests and side-by-side runs show the new part matches the old. You approve each switch-over.

  5. Train and Support

Your team gets a walkthrough of what changed, plus the code and documentation. Ongoing maintenance is your choice.

Engineering Standards

Built to Stay Secure and Supported

We modernize onto mainstream technology that still gets security updates, so any capable team can maintain the code later. These are the tools we use most, not the full list.

  • .NET
  • C#
  • SQL Server
  • PostgreSQL
  • Angular
  • React
  • Node.js
  • TypeScript
  • Microsoft Azure
  • AWS
  • Docker
  • Code Review on Every Change
  • Automated Tests for Core Workflows
  • Automated Releases Through a Staging Copy
  • Documentation Your Team Can Use

Access by Role

Each person sees and changes only what their role allows.

Passwords and Keys in a Vault

In the new version, passwords and keys live in a secure vault, never in the code.

Error Monitoring From Launch Day

Errors reach our team quickly instead of waiting for a user to report them.

Security Updates Kept Current

With a maintenance plan, we keep security and dependency updates current.

Legacy System Modernization FAQ

What Is Legacy System Modernization?

Legacy system modernization moves the software your business depends on from outdated technology to supported technology, while keeping the data and workflows that still work. Depending on the system, that means upgrading the code, replacing it one part at a time, moving it to the cloud or rebuilding it. Application modernization is the same work, focused on one app.

Should We Rewrite Our Legacy App or Modernize It Step by Step?

Usually step by step. Replacing one part at a time keeps the business running, shows progress early and keeps each change small enough to test. A full rewrite makes sense when the old code can't be saved or the technology has no upgrade path. After the review we recommend one and explain why.

How Do You Avoid Disrupting Daily Work?

Until a new part is ready, the old system stays in use. Your team tries the new version on a staging copy first, and we schedule each switch-over with you at a time that suits your work.

How Do You Handle Data Migration and Cleanup?

We run trial migrations on a copy of your data first. Along the way we remove duplicates, fix broken records and agree with you on what to archive. Then we compare record counts and totals between the old and new systems, and the final move happens once you approve the results.

Nobody Documented Our System. How Do You Learn What It Does?

We read the code and the database, and we talk with the people who use the system every day. Our senior engineers use AI coding tools to read and summarize old code faster, and an engineer reviews every finding. The result is a written map of the screens, rules and data that stays with you.

Which Older Systems Do You Modernize?

Common examples are .NET Framework apps, Visual Basic 6 and other desktop apps, Classic ASP, Microsoft Access databases, AngularJS and older PHP sites, often on an aging Windows server. We move .NET Framework to modern .NET, desktop apps to the web and data to SQL Server or PostgreSQL. That is not the full list, so ask about yours.

Do We Need to Move to the Cloud?

Not always. Moving to Microsoft Azure or AWS makes sense when the old server is a risk or nobody wants to manage hardware anymore. We recommend it after the review. For website hosting, business email and Microsoft 365, see our IT support services.

How Much Does Application Modernization Cost and How Long Does It Take?

It depends on the size of the system, the state of its code and data and the path you choose. After a short call we send a proposal with the approach, phases, timeline and cost. Because the work runs in phases, the first modernized part can go live before the rest is finished.

Who Maintains the System After Modernization?

Your team, ours or both. The code lives in your repository and any cloud account is in your name, so any capable team can take it over. We also offer maintenance billed monthly, with no minimum term. To add engineers to your own team instead, see our IT staff augmentation services.
